EU-Russia Dialogue

Cooperation between the EU and Russia in the energy sector has become increasingly important. Energy infrastructure is a particularly significant area of common interest. Pipelines are primary infrastructure for securing gas supply.

Nord Stream represents a key infrastructure link between the European Union and the world’s leading natural gas supplier. It will meet Europe’s long-term energy needs and make an essential contribution to ensuring the security of natural gas supplies. The importance of Nord Stream is appreciated by the EU, which has granted it TEN status.

New benchmark for transnational projects

Nord Stream is a project of unprecedented scope — it passes through exclusive economic zones of five countries, and also requires cooperation at many levels: EU and national authorities, politicians, scientists, non-governmental organizations, and businesses. Also, the legislation that regulates Nord Stream ranges from international conventions to national legislation in each of the countries.

Successful implementation of Nord Stream will set an example of efficient multilateral cooperation, in particular in assessing environmental impacts in a transboundary context. By solving existing problems, in particular transfrontier bottlenecks and gaps, it will set a benchmark for trans-national projects.

Nord Stream sets out to establish a new level of cooperation between businesses, political institutions and non-governmental organisations with regard to development of energy infrastructure. This approach sets a new framework for energy security and sustainable development in Europe.
