Wintershall is the oil & gas branch of BASF. Wintershall has world-wide activities in oil and gas exploration and production: North Sea; Caspian Sea; North Africa; Middle East; South America.

Wintershall projects connecting platforms with onshore pipeline nets in the Northern Sea, offshore Argentina and offshore northern Africa, including a recent project with a pipeline in the environmentally sensitive region of the Wattenmeer on the North Sea coast.

Established in 1993, WINGAS is a joint venture of Wintershall and OAO Gazprom, with each having a 50% stake. WINGAS is a natural gas trading company and it supplies gas via its over 2,000 km-long network of pipelines to consumers in Germany and Western Europe. Through Nord Stream, WINGAS will procure 9 billion m³ p.a. of natural gas for a period of 25 years.
