Nord Stream is fully committed to preserving the Baltic Sea environment. The pipeline will be built with proven and environmentally sound technology. It is planned with profound awareness of environmental issues and conditions of the Baltic Sea. Nord Stream’s ambitious safety concept will set new standards for pipeline safety. - Survey vessel Franklin carrying out seabed surveys along the pipeline route
- Nord Stream has initiated and financed a vast number of studies of the ecosystem in the Baltic Sea as well as possible interlinks with human health and welfare. All of the results are included by Nord Stream into the pipeline planning.
- Based on an intensive dialogue with the authorities and public in the Baltic Sea region, Nord Stream is completing a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), in accordance with international and national regulations.
- The EIA process includes different aspects including possible risks for the ecosystem such as impact on the seabed and fishery and dumped munitions and ways to mitigate them.
- The key to pipeline safety is the implementation of high technical safety standards, controlled by independent inspectors.
- Shareholders of Nord Stream are major energy companies with wide experience in building and operation of pipelines, who impose their high safety standards on Nord Stream.
The Baltic Sea is unique in terms of its flora, fauna and human activities. Nord Stream has carefully studied these factors and taken them into account in the pipeline route planning. Thousands of kilometres of offshore pipelines in the world prove the safety and environmental reliability of this technology. Please find more information on that topic in our e-FACTS magazine:
