MunitionsDuring and after the First and Second World Wars, chemical and conventional munitions were deployed and disposed of in the Baltic Sea. In order to guarantee the safe construction and operation of the pipeline, Nord Stream carefully assessed the seabed with the aim of avoiding munitions. Where avoidance is not possible, Nord Stream ensures the safe and secure handling of munitions findings in close co-operation with the responsible authorities. The presence of conventional and chemical munitions on the Baltic seabed is high, as the Sea was considered the best means of disposal by Allied countries, following WWII. Findings indicate that between 100,000 and 150,000 mines were deployed in the sea, primarily in the Gulf of Finland. During the planning and design phase of the project, Nord Stream’s strategy was to establish a rigorous baseline of actual seabed conditions. This involved the combination of public domain studies, field surveys, expert review and consultation. Based on the results of the surveys, it was possible to avoid many sites where munitions would have impeded safe construction and installation. However, in specific locations, it is necessary to clear munitions. For safe removal Nord Stream developed a munitions clearance plan in close cooperation with the responsible national and international authorities, thus benefiting from their experience with the handling of dumped munitions. All clearance activities are carefully monitored and weekly reports will be issued. Please find more information on that topic in our e-FACTS magazine:
