Operational Safety

Safety during operation

As soon as Nord Stream’s gas transport has started, the pipeline will be remotely controlled from a dispatching centre where specialists will monitor the system around the clock. Designated Nord Stream personnel will conduct maintenance procedures that will keep the system on the same high level of reliability throughout its lifetime. Among the procedures are regular runs along the pipeline interior with Pipeline Inspection Gauges (PIGs/intelligent PIGs) to examine for corrosion or leaks. Remotely-Operated Vehicles (ROVs) will be used to monitor the pipeline exterior and provide visual inspection data.

If the analysis of this data reveals any irregularities, the necessary remedial measures will be taken immediately. Safe and reliable operation of the pipeline during the operations will be ensured by the Pipeline Control System.

Lifetime environmental monitoring

Consistent with its obligations as a prudent and responsible operator, Nord Stream is committed minimising the impact on the environment from its operations.

Consequently, Nord Stream will implement a focused, fit-for-purpose environmental monitoring programme for the entire lifetime of the pipeline with the following objectives:

  • Verify findings of modelling used to predict environmental impacts
  • Ensure that the pipeline does not cause impacts not previously identified
  • Ensure that pipeline construction does not cause greater impacts than predicted
  • Meet the requirements of the national permits
  • Monitor the rehabilitation of the environment after construction
