Environmental aspects

What are the main environmental impacts of Nord Stream?

The pipeline generally is not expected to cause any major impact on the environment. This is also evidenced by the large number of offshore pipelines in the North Sea and elsewhere. Any disturbances that will be associated with the laying of the pipeline during the construction phase will be temporary. During the operational phase the impacts of our pipeline are practically non-existent.

Possible munitions on the seabed are an issue to which we pay special attention. Processing of any possible munitions findings will be discussed with the respective national authorities in due course.

How does Nord Stream limit negative effects on the ecosystem in the Baltic Sea?

In planning, construction, and operation of the pipeline, we will take into account all ecological, maritime and legal considerations, as well as concerns brought up by the countries across the Baltic Sea. We will respect all local and international legal requirements regarding environmental protection and safety, as well as our own high standards and internationally recognised working practices. We will carry out comprehensive environmental research along the pipeline route. This comprehensive research will provide new data and expertise on the Baltic Sea (its conditions, flora and fauna). We will make the research data available to the Baltic Sea countries. This is a significant contribution by Nord Stream to research and preservation of the Baltic Sea.

Will Nord Stream increase CO2 emissions?

Natural gas is the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel with the lowest emission level: 25% less than oil and 40 per cent less than coal. Natural gas can essentially diverse the energy mix and help to decrease the total CO2 emissions. In general, having a number of alternative sources of energy is the best way to ensure security of supply. Natural gas is one of them. Gas should not, and will not, replace renewable energies, but is suitable as a bridge to a future hydrogen economy.
