PIG Traps at the Russian Landfall Facility

The integrity of the Nord Stream Pipelines is checked on a regular basis by what are known as intelligent Pipeline Inspection Gauges (PIGs). They detect minimal changes due to corrosion or mechanical damage. They also register any possible movement of the pipeline due to external impacts. The PIGs are housed in traps and fed into the pipeline via launchers in Russia, they travel with the flow of the gas and are recovered safely in Germany.
