Side-scan sonar is retrieved

The high-resolution side-scan sonar provides a detailed picture of the structure of the sea floor and objects lying on the seabed. The magnetometer provides information on ferrous (iron-based) materials. To date, the state-of-the-art equipment has identified a small number of targets as conventional munitions. Nord Stream is establishing procedures for the safe handling of these objects in close cooperation with the responsible authorities. In order to minimise the risks associated with munitions dump sites and mines, Nord Stream is conducting what is likely to be the most extensive survey ever of the Baltic Sea.
