On October 8, 2012, just 30 months after the start of construction, both lines of Nord Stream's twin pipeline system came on-stream. This occasion was celebrated at an event held in Portovaya Bay, Russia, near the starting point of the pipelines at the Baltic Coast. In a video message shown for the occasion, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia said: “Nord Stream will meet Europe's growing demand for energy resources. Gas will be supplied directly by the shortest route, linking the major Russian gas reserves to European markets without transit risks, steadily and smoothly. We can guarantee this.”
